The glaze library

Every glaze with its swatch, its cone and surface, and the pots it has been seen on. Pick a color to start, then narrow by cone and finish. Historic glazes are here for reference; house recipes and test results arrive with each firing.

How the swatches are made

A swatch is only useful if you can trust it, so every one follows the same rules. The point is that two chips on this page can be compared, not just admired.

  • Fired on the same white stoneware test tile with a textured band, at the cone listed, in the atmosphere listed.
  • Photographed on the same grey card in the same daylight-balanced light, then the chip color is read from the tile.
  • Where no tile has been fired yet, the chip shows a rendered color marked rendered until a real one replaces it. Rendered chips are never presented as test results.
  • The photo on each tile is a museum piece that shows the glaze family in the wild, credited in the panel and on the image credits page. The chip under it is the swatch color at the cone listed.
